Laura Battiferri (1523-1589) was a famous Italian poet during the Renaissance. She was the illegitimate daughter of Giovanni Battiferri, but was later legitimized.
In 1550, her second husband was the sculptor Bartolomeo Ammanati.
She wrote over 400 poems, which were widely read during her lifetime both in Italy and abroad[1]. Her works were translated into Spanish and she was popular at the Spanish court, which approved of her catholic beliefs. She was friends with the poet Torquato Tasso and with the painter and poet Bronzino, who also painted her portrait. With Laura Terracina, she exchanged poems in praise of the other[2].
In her latter years she became a supporter of the Jesuits and designated them her heirs[3].
